MEP Estimator (3 days per week)
The opportunity
An established building services contractor is looking for a part-time Estimator to sit at the front end of every project, turning drawings and specifications into accurate, competitive quotations that win work and protect margin.
This is a genuine three-day-a-week role, not a full-time job squeezed into fewer hours.
What makes this role different
The workload is built around roughly five to ten enquiries a month, so it suits someone who wants steady, focused work rather than a packed diary.
Some weeks run busier than others.
You would price predominantly mechanical works from drawings and specifications across commercial construction and fit-out projects, and where it helps, visit site to firm up the numbers.
Good estimating here rests on judgement as much as arithmetic.
Anyone can apply a standard rate.
An experienced estimator knows when two hours on paper is really an hour and a quarter on site, and where a price can safely come down.
A great deal of the value is simply knowing where to look.
The role would suit an experienced estimator winding down from full-time work who still wants to stay in the game three days a week, or anyone seeking real part-time hours without dropping their standards.
What you'll be doing
- Price predominantly mechanical works accurately from drawings and specifications
- Visit site at tender stage, where the job allows, to inform and firm up your pricing
- Revisit pricing post-tender, trimming where a site visit or better information allows
- Prepare clear, competitive quotations and turn them around promptly
- Advise where a price can and cannot move, and explain the reasoning behind it
- Manage your own workload across the week with minimal supervision
- Provide support to the post-tender team to assist in procurement
- Accurate pricing that wins work without leaving margin on the table
- Quotations turned around quickly, so the business can move on live enquiries
- Sound calls on where site knowledge can bring a price down, and where it cannot
- Extensive estimating experience in building services or construction (mechanical, plumbing, fit-out or similar)
- Ideally a background that came up through the trade, from hands-on work into engineering and then estimating, so you know where real-world costs differ from the book rates
- Sharp commercial judgement on where margin sits and where a price can be tightened
- Confidence working independently and owning your own diary
- UK-based, with solid working knowledge of the UK market and UK pricing
- Three days a week, with a suggested split of one day in the office for face-to-face review and two days from home
- Office based in the Woodford Green area, ideally within a comfortable commute
- Fully remote considered for the right person, with the right set-up, as estimating lends itself well to home working
- Flexible on exact days and happy to work around the right candidate
- Start as soon as suitable
Genuine part-time estimating roles with an established firm are rare.
This is steady, respected work that lets an experienced estimator keep their hand in without the full-time grind.
The work is varied, the judgement is yours, and the pace is sensible.
