About The Role
- You'll be leading and managing the Wales Metal Mines Programme delivery team, supporting them to deliver their projects, often in a senior project role
- You'll deliver selected projects yourself with support from Assistant Project Managers.
- You'll also manage the internal relationships with key delivery support teams, including our Engineers and Technical teams
- And you'll be working closely with the Principal Programme Manager to make sure projects align with the delivery needs of the Programme
The Wales Metal Mines Programme is responsible for the assessment, development, planning and delivery of pollution mitigation and environmental improvement projects, across the portfolio of abandoned metal mine sites in Wales; it is being jointly delivered together with NRW, requiring truly collaborative working.
There are 1,300 abandoned metal mines in Wales, polluting more than 700km of river reaches.
Remediating these legacy mines and mitigating the long term impact they have requires a substantial programme of works.
As Programme Lead you’ll be supporting the team as they manage often complex, strategically important projects, which assess, develop and implement intervention strategies (including mine water remediation schemes) to address pollution and other issues from legacy mining activities.
Projects generally include a variety of remedial interventions, not least surface water and spoil heap management and both passive and active minewater treatment schemes and we actively consider and trial novel and emerging technologies.
We encounter a wide range of environmental sensitivities and constraints at all sites, with most of the sites having some designated areas / features either close to or on-site (such as Scheduled Monuments, SSSI) and most typically located in rural areas and sitting within or close to protected areas (such as National Parks, SAC and SPA).
Many of these features also present opportunities for multiple outcomes, including in collaboration with other stakeholders, so increasing benefits for both the project and the Programme. These could relate to environmental enhancements such as bio-diversity and heritage improvements, or even renewable energy generation.
