Consultant Geriatrician
- Join a large, established team of 18 geriatricians in a supportive tertiary teaching hospital
- Work across acute, subacute, orthogeriatric and outpatient services with strong multidisciplinary support
- Opportunities for teaching, research and service development within a leading academic health environment
You’ll be joining one of Australia’s most comprehensive geriatric medicine services within a major tertiary teaching hospital and the state’s primary referral centre for southern Tasmania.
The department provides 106 inpatient beds across three sites, including 60 acute older persons’ care beds, 36 subacute Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) beds, and 10 specialised beds for patients with behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia requiring slow-stream rehabilitation.
The service also includes a GEM at Home program, expanding care beyond the hospital setting.
Clinically, the role offers excellent variety.
Geriatricians contribute to acute inpatient care, consultative services, orthogeriatric shared care models and specialised outpatient clinics including memory, falls and balance, and movement disorders.
Additional subspecialty interests such as geriatric oncology, continence and pain management are supported within the department.
Clinics utilise Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment and are supported by dedicated aged care nursing and a co-located Community Rehabilitation Unit.
The department has a strong academic focus and vibrant training environment, supported by advanced trainees, registrars, interns and resident medical officers.
There are excellent opportunities to contribute to teaching, research and innovative service development, including the strategic development of an Older Person’s Emergency Department geriatrician model.
Where you’ll be living
You’ll be based in Tasmania’s vibrant capital, a picturesque harbour city known for its thriving food scene, arts culture and easy access to world-class wilderness.
The city offers excellent schools, family-friendly neighbourhoods and short commute times.
Weekends can be spent exploring beaches, national parks, wineries and alpine landscapes, all within easy reach.
It’s a lifestyle that allows you to balance a rewarding specialist career with exceptional quality of life.
