Low Carbon Energy Engineer


Our client is a small but growing consultancy and will provide an interesting and varied challenge to the right person.

The successful candidate will provide occasional support for District Eating Ltd (DEL)s, sister Company to Tomson Consulting Ltd.





*They support flexible working, This position is home based, so you can live remotely if you prefer, but you would need to be able to travel to Sheffield on a regular basis, so being located commuting distance to and from Sheffield is preferable.

Fixed term-initial 1-year contract, with a view to extension thereafter

TCL specialises in energy waste and water efficiency, low carbon energy projects and district heating development.

District Eating specialises in the development of horticulture projects using waste heat and CO2. 

The work will include (but not be limited to) district heating development from feasibility through to detailed project development, resource and energy auditing and cost benefit analysis, ESOS auditing, consulting on sustainable horticulture and urban farming projects from feasibility through to construction.

You will be an engineer with a flexible and ‘can-do’ attitude who pays attention to detail without getting lost in it.

The successful applicant will have strong core skills that can be used in different contexts, while much of the work will involve energy engineering, some of this work will be have a horticultural emphasis, specifying hydroponic and LED solutions.

An ability to solve problems and have an open mind will be really important for this role.

TCL are currently working on cutting edge energy from minewater district heating projects, and District Eating is a young Company showing exciting growth potential.

The right candidate will be working with both businesses through a growth and expansion stage which could lead to interesting progression within either Tomson Consulting Ltd or District Eating Ltd as they develop.

We are looking for a steady and stable individual for this role, with an ability to manage work load and meet deadlines without compromising on quality.

Our client recognises the importance of a healthy work life balance and are open to candidates who are interested in working part time or on a 4-day week pro rata basis. 

Key skills


  • Engineering degree
  • At least 5 years post-graduation experience of providing energy engineering support to clients
  • Technical and economic modelling skills (Excel based)
  • Business planning
  • Cost benefit analysis
  • Energy waste and water auditing
  • An open mind and an ability to solve problems
  • District heating and private wire experience
  • Experience of Heat Networks Code of Practice
  • Perform building heat demand calculations
  • Prepare feasibility, concept design and implementation studies
  • Support detail design of heat distribution systems at network and individual building
  • Specify Boilers, CHP units, Heat Pumps, Pipework and associated infrastructure
  • Familiarity with GIS software
  • Develop relationships with Clients and key suppliers
  • Work in close collaboration with colleagues from other disciplines as required
  • Participate in the preparation/presentation of proposals/bids as required including estimating timescales and costs for proposed works
  • Ensure that the technical content of all work carried out is correct and completed in accordance within agreed timescales and budgets.

Desirable skills


  • Experience with Energy Pro, and CAD or equivalent
  • Experience of district heating construction and post commissioning
  • Experience of anaerobic digestion projects
  • Experience of energy systems in the horticulture industry
  • Experience of waste heat utilisation projects
  • Chartered Engineer status
  • Business development skills
  • ESOS Lead Assessor

Remuneration

£35-£45k dependent on experience.

Potential for part time pro-rata positions

All positions dependent on a 6 month trial period.
